Sight-Size Figure Painting by Stephen Bauman (Week 1-13)

Over the course of 13 weeks, Stephen Bauman will guide you through the process of painting the figure using the sight-size method. You will learn how to make a transfer drawing and a color study as preparation for your final painting. Stephen will also share his expertise on materials and techniques used when painting the human body. By the end of the course, you will have acquired the necessary skills to accurately capture the human form on canvas through the sight-size approach.

Week 1: Overview of Materials and Beginning a Preparatory Drawing

During the first week, Stephen will showcase the materials required for a sight-size figure painting. He will impart his knowledge on the different drawing and painting tools, and guide you through the process of stretching canvas and paper.

Week 2: Developing the Preparatory Drawing

In the second week, you will gain an understanding of how to set up the light and shadow patterns of the figure in your preliminary drawing. Stephen will show you the steps involved in building up the values using graphite and white chalk.

Week 3: Refining the Preparatory Drawing

During the third week, Stephen will demonstrate the techniques for refining your initial figure drawing. He will teach you how to produce delicate shifts in the figure’s forms and how to assess the figure with accuracy and precision.

Week 4: Finishing the Preparatory Drawing

In the fourth week, you will finalize your preparatory drawing of the figure. Stephen will show you how to apply the finishing touches to your drawing. You will also learn how to express the complete light and shadow pattern of the figure.

Week 5: Transfer the Drawing and Creating a Color Study

During the fifth week, Stephen will show you how to transfer his completed preparatory drawing of the figure to canvas. You will discover how to make a color study of the pose, and then proceed to the underpainting stage.

Week 6: Developing an Underpainting

In the sixth week, you will be taught how to create an underpainting for your sight-size figure painting. Stephen will show you how he builds the underpainting using raw umber and white.

Week 7: Establishing the First Color Pass

During the seventh week, you will learn the process of making the first color layer of your sight-size painting. Stephen will instruct you on how to prepare your colors using a limited palette. He will also demonstrate how he organizes his palette for an efficient workspace.

Week 8: Completion of First Color Pass and Beginning of Second Color Pass

In the eighth week, you will learn how to finish the first color layer of your figure painting in the sight-size method. Stephen will concentrate on creating a full representation of the pose.

Week 9: Second Color Pass – The Lower Legs

During the ninth week, you will start on the second color layer of the sight-size figure painting. Stephen will show you how to build upon the first color pass as the base for the final paint layers.

Week 10: Second Color Pass – The Torso

In the tenth week, Stephen will guide you through the process of refining the second color layer of your sight-size figure painting. First, you will learn how to oil out the painting, which revitalizes the color saturation. Stephen will concentrate mainly on enhancing the torso area of the model.

Week 11: Second Color Pass – The Portrait

In the eleventh week, you will be taught how to apply the second color layer to the head of your figure painting. Stephen will work on the shoulder region and sharpen the portrait of the model. Additionally, you will gain valuable insights into capturing the nuances of the face.

Week 12: Second Color Pass – Refinement

During the twelfth week, Stephen will focus on the second color layer of the legs. You will learn how to enhance and clarify the lower part of the figure. Additionally, you will gain insights into painting the intricate details of the legs and feet.

Week 13: Finishing Touches

In the thirteenth and final week, Stephen will finish his long pose sight-size figure painting. You will learn how to make the final adjustments to your canvas. Additionally, you will discover how to create a polished and cohesive painting that captures the essence of the figure.
