Inking for Comic Books – Traditional and Digital Techniques by Sam Hart

Learn to bring parallel universes to life in your comic book illustrations by mastering three different inking techniques. Comic book artist Sam Hart will teach you how to use traditional inks, black and white ink wash, and digital inks to create a fully-inked comic book page. Develop your storytelling skills and give weight and atmosphere to your scenes while emphasizing light and shadows. In Sam’s second Domestika course, you’ll take your comic book creation skills to the next level after learning the essentials in his first course, Visual Narrative for Comic Books: Illustrate Your Own Universe.

In this course, comic book and storyboard artist Sam Hart teaches how to combine traditional and digital inking techniques to create a comic book narrative. The course begins with an introduction to Sam Hart and his artistic journey, followed by an overview of inking theory and the materials needed for the course.

Participants will learn traditional inking techniques through a series of exercises before moving on to watercolor inks and digital inks. The techniques learned will then be put into practice to ink a final comic book page, with a focus on creating contrast and volume, adding tone and texture with watercolors, and finishing touches with digital inks.

The course concludes with practical tips for ongoing inking practice and a lesson on how to prepare and send an inked page to a colorist and editor.
