Learn the basic principles of editorial design In this course, David Kimura, graphic and editorial designer, will teach you how to compose texts correctly, paying special attention to the architecture of words.
You will know the principles of typographic composition, from the space between characters, to the programming of justified values. You will also learn the criteria to define the interline, the prose in relation to the body of text and some tricks of the trade to solve common problems in the composition of texts.
What will you learn in this online course? You will begin by knowing the work of David Kimura and you will get into editorial design from the perspective of a passionate microtype.
With some reference examples, you will discover the importance of typography and the correct choice of each parameter in the texts.
You will learn the basic concepts that every designer must know before starting an editorial project. David will explain important topics such as typographic selection and fundamental orthotypography.
Next, you will immerse yourself in the microtype. You will know the basic rules to correctly space the characters, the importance of the body, the interline, the width of the box and the relationship between them and typographic selection.
You will learn to justify texts on the left and on both sides, and to prepare paragraph and character styles.
You will also discover which are the most common problems and errors in the text composition process and how to solve them without spoiling the paragraph formation.
Finally, you will work on the galleys of a text, applying the criteria learned.
What is this course’s project? You will design and make the composition of the texts of a literary magazine and you will learn to design and form “type” pages for your projects.

Requirements and materials It is advisable to have previous knowledge of editorial design and have notions of InDesign management.
